Logbook : of the McPherson (Army transport), 1900 February 12 - March 22.

The McPherson, commanded by H.J. Byrne, traveled from New York to Gibara, Cuba, and return, 12 February to 10 March 1900; in dry dock at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, 2-9 March 1900; and from New York to Matanzas, Havana, and Cienfugoes, Cuba, 14-22 March 1900. Each page is a printed form that provides space to write the course, winds, barometer, air and water temperature, the name of the lookout, and remarks such as weather conditions. An undated newspaper clipping is included. Entitled "Ran Down an Island," it describes how the transport, with 456 men of the Fifth Infantry on board, lay stranded on Fortune Island for two days, and floated off without damage to men or the ship.
